In 2022, we began, in synergy with ApT Dolomiti Paganella and in collaboration with the Institute of Brand Logic from Innsbruck, the strategic development process for the region to define the tourism identity of the Rotaliana Königsberg. The need for this process arose from a deep awareness and an unwavering belief that the Rotaliana Königsberg area can offer a lot even from a tourism perspective. Much of it is hidden or underappreciated! It is a place where people live well and where "high-quality" products are created. However, there is a lack of a distinctive unifying element: something that can highlight these resources and allow their development—creating new opportunities—for residents and guests who wish to discover this corner of Trentino. A beauty that, often, those who live here, like us, take for granted and therefore do not adequately value.
THE METHOD USED
We wanted to use a participatory methodology that would allow us to listen to, and consequently actively represent, all the facets of our community. During 2022, meetings were organized with administrators, local associations (Pro Loco), and various economic sectors including hospitality, food service, retail, and wineries, as well as agricultural businesses. A group of about 100 people from the area, representing its productive, cultural, and associative excellences—divided into working groups—engaged in this process, dedicating time and energy to imagining a different future, where tourism could, and will, play a very important role. This methodology was chosen because we are convinced that only together, with the contributions of the skills and ideas of those who live, invest, and work in the Piana Rotaliana Königsberg, can we achieve tangible, shared, and lasting results.
THE FUTURE IDENTITY
Thanks to the group work, 7 success factors have been identified, that is, 7 unique aspects that are part of the identity of our territory but that we must develop together and continuously in the future. Based on these 7 success factors, a commitment has been defined, which is a shared vision that will guide us in the implementation of concrete projects to be carried out in the coming years!
In addition to a shared future vision, 7 areas of intervention have been identified, with 35 objectives and 69 concrete projects to be implemented.
Public presentation - June 5, 2023
A rich and emotional event that, for the first time, brought together the communities of our 8 villages to explore a new future for our region. The occasion marked the presentation of the first results of the tourism development program for the Rotaliana Königsberg. A journey born from a profound awareness and firm belief that the region has so much to offer, yet much of its potential remains hidden. What is missing is a distinctive, unifying element: tourism that can enhance these resources and enable their development, first and foremost for residents, and then for visitors who wish to discover this unique corner of Trentino.
Public presentation - June 5, 2025
An evening to renew the commitment made by the tourist office and the 6 local municipalities that began the Rotaliana Königsberg tourism development project 3 years ago. During the meeting, the projects completed over the last two years were presented to the community, demonstrating how what appeared as an idea (a drawing) in the 2023 video has now become reality.
Projects
Between 2023 and 2025, we began working on several projects with the help and enthusiasm of those who offered their support:
SKETCH OF THE WINE GARDEN
In order to achieve a change, it is necessary to have a clear idea and image of what is to be accomplished. Therefore, it was essential to create an animated video to help the local population and operators understand and get excited about the future identity, while also making them aware of the change we want to implement.
SIGNAGE (TERRITORY ORIENTATION)
In recent years, local administrations have invested with commitment and vision in the creation of new infrastructures and attractions, designed to enhance our territory and make it increasingly welcoming, dynamic, and attractive for both residents and visitors. Among these works, the panoramic Skywalk on Monte di Mezzocorona, the evocative suspension bridges, the scenic walkway over the Avisio River, the Val del Rì via ferrata, the nature trail along the Noce River, and the Giro del Vino 50 itinerary. However, for these opportunities to be fully appreciated and to truly become moments of connection, discovery, and well-being, it is essential to ensure full accessibility along with clear and effective communication. Precisely for this reason, in parallel with the creation of the new attractions, work was done on a coordinated, clearly visible and coherent signage system, capable of orienting with simplicity and describing the territory in an engaging way that respects its identity. We believe that enhancing a territory also means making it readable, inclusive and usable so that everyone can experience it with ease, safety, and awareness, discovering its natural, cultural, and food and wine richness. Step by step, with these initiatives, we are building a more open, inclusive community, committed to collective well-being and proud of its roots.
TRAINING COURSES ON TYPICAL MENUS
To encourage the local population to participate in the creation of the "Wine Garden," and in particular to raise awareness of local food and wine, two show-cooking events titled "Tris di Chef" were organized. On October 28, 2024 at the Rotari Winery and on November 11, 2024 at the Martinelli Winery in Mezzocorona, chefs Lorenzo Callegari (Vecchia Sorni restaurant, Lavis), Giovanni d'Alitta (Elementi restaurant, Mezzocorona) and Paolo Dolzan (PerBacco restaurant, Mezzolombardo) combined their skills and culinary styles to create a four-course menu reinterpreting local ingredients into delicious dishes that can be replicated at home. It was a unique opportunity to rediscover the Rotaliana Königsberg region through the talent of chefs and producers who, with their creations and stories, offered a true journey through local gastronomy. The events were highly appreciated and well attended, with 115 participants registering. It's the locals, above all, who need to know what the region has to offer, which is why the project continues, thanks also to the collaboration with Accademia d'Impresa, through courses and new opportunities that allow people to discover our flavors. These initiatives demonstrate how food is not just nourishment, it’s culture, memory, and a vision for the future.
WINE GARDEN EVENTS
The goal is to convey to those attending the various events (both residents and tourists) the unique characteristics of the area and the high quality of the events. A handbook of guidelines has therefore been developed in collaboration with Pro Loco associations, setting forth specific quality standards. Pro Loco organizations are now paying ever greater attention to the needs of their attendees: many events offer menus designed for celiacs and vegetarians, with a strong focus on quality and local produce. They are also dedicated to curating the decor, adding floral accents that contribute to a warm and welcoming atmosphere.
But they don't stop at aesthetics: they also enhance the sites from a cultural perspective, organizing guided tours, often free, to share the history, traditions, and beauty of our towns with visitors. They work hard to improve communication, strengthening promotion through both digital and more traditional channels, to reach an ever-widening audience, even beyond our borders. Coordination with the tourist office has strengthened the collaboration between the eight local Pro Loco organizations: they now know each other better and enthusiastically share best practices. Each year, they jointly develop a shared calendar to avoid overlapping main events and give each initiative the right space and visibility.
INCONTRI ROTALIANI AND WINE INITIATIVES
The quality of a region also depends on what its people are capable of creating. In our case, wine has long been the result of expertise, culture, passion, and collaboration. In recent years, the tourist office has focused primarily on three initiatives and projects that put this very focus at its core.
The first is Incontri Rotaliani: a biennial event that brings together experts, producers, and enthusiasts in the three DOC municipalities. It's not just a showcase for our products, but a moment of growth to learn about and open up to other virtuous territories. In this 4th edition, after Burgundy, Rioja, and Etna, on October 25 and 26, 2025, we will explore the Syrah wines of Cortona and Côte-Rôtie. Guided tastings, meetings with producers, dinners with local chefs, and in-depth discussions are scheduled.
The second is the collaboration with the Fondazione E. Mach's "Wines and Territory" competition, organized in recent years in conjunction with the Teroldego Rotaliano Exhibition of the Mezzocorona Pro Loco. This competition allows producers to showcase their quality and allows the region to promote its unique landscape and production characteristics. Thanks to the participation of judges, journalists, and experts from across Italy, this is a very important promotional opportunity.
Finally, "Wine Weekends", a project created to open the doors of wineries on weekends. We conducted an initial pilot in fall 2024 with a shared calendar among wineries. The goal is to turn this into a seasonal event with growing participation. Today, promoting wine excellence means creating opportunities for dialogue, learning, and shared storytelling—but above all, it means nurturing a network, growing together, and building value through collaboration.
WINE-TREKKING
This is a long-term project, already well underway. The aim is to create routes already designed in previous years, making them accessible and attractive thanks to a specific theming, which will allow guests and residents to enjoy exciting trekking experiences.
TERRITORY HUNT
The Territory Hunt was born from the desire to rediscover our villages, by blending stories, landscapes, culture, and excellent wines in a fun and engaging experience. It's not just an itinerary, but an invitation to observe and be surprised by details and rediscover places and details often taken for granted. Accessible via a web app developed in collaboration with Strikeweb the experience includes riddles, quizzes, and interactive challenges at each stop, turning each participant into the protagonist of a journey full of clues and curiosities. The first Territory Hunt route will be launched in the summer of 2025: a moment of celebration, connection and shared exploration.
TERRITORY POP-UP
The Pop Up is a mobile and dynamic storytelling space shaped like the traditional Trentino pergola. Set up during major local events, it offers information, brochures, and tastings—encouraging collaboration and engagement with local producers and Pro Loco associations. Its real strength lies in how it was conceived and built: designed by a volunteer working group and brought to life by local businesses. Holzhof (Mezzolombardo): coordination and design FAL (Lavis): wood supply Paller (Mezzocorona): roofing S2 Print (Mezzocorona): graphic panels Metalcarpenterie Dalfovo (Mezzolombardo): transport Rupe (Mezzolombardo): storage. These companies contributed pro bono, a significant gesture demonstrating a shared desire to enhance the local area and invest in its future. The Pop-Up is a tangible symbol of territorial synergy and a shared vision for growth, uniting tourism, business, and community.
VISITOR CENTER DESIGN
It has now become essential to relocate of the tourist office’s info point, which is currently neither visible nor recognizable. The new space will be both experiential and narrative, designed to tell the story of the territory while offering practical information. The next steps include identifying the most suitable location and beginning the preliminary design phase.
PRK WITH COLORS - COVER CROP
First of all, what is a cover crop? It's an agricultural practice that involves growing specific plants that improve soil fertility and structure: it adds organic matter and nitrogen, and combats erosion and weeds. In the vineyards, it keeps the soil healthy and productive. This project aims to create something both beneficial and aesthetically pleasing: in a garden, it's important to safeguard biodiversity and the richness of the soil itself. Precisely because of this double soul - aesthetic and ecological - the project was born in close collaboration with the Technology Transfer Center of the Edmund Mach Foundation, a point of reference for innovation in the agricultural field, and the Polytechnic University of Milan for the landscaping part. So far, 15 wineries have joined, including three cooperative wineries. This year’s vineyard blooms have been reported and promoted across digital platform - perhaps you've noticed them too, strolling among the rows or along the Giro del Vino 50 route. Our commitment and our hope is that more and more winemakers will decide to join this project, to cultivate not only grapes, but also beauty, health, and a future.
PRK WITH COLORS - ROUNDABOUTS
Between late 2024 and early 2025, four new flower-filled roundabouts were conceived and designed, serving as true "gateways" that immediately communicate the area's winemaking vocation to those arriving, making it clear from the outset that they are entering a true "Wine Garden”. Each roundabout features a grapevine leaf, crafted in perforated Corten steel, representing iconic local varieties such as Teroldego and Nosiola. Funded by the Comunità di Valle, the project is now moving forward with official agreements signed by participating municipalities.
PRK WITH COLORS - "COLTIVARE IL GIARDINO DEL VINO" MANUAL
In 2024 is born the manual about “Coltivare il Giardino del Vino” with the aim of stimulating the creation of a beautiful and well-kept territory, a real garden full of life and colors. To create the Wine Garden, each of us must do our part and, even in our own small way, make the place where we live and work unique. Precisely for this reason, the manual was shared free of charge to all residents of the six municipalities in the area, through door-to-door delivery. Inside you found 15 plant easy to cultivating, useful information on how to best manage soil, watering and lots of practice advice for sustainable keeping unwanted mushroom and insects away. And that's not all: the second edition is also available in digital format (downloadable from www.vistirotaliana.it) so it can reach even more people, wherever they are.
This is an "open" project, led by the Tourist Consortium, which can be enriched at any time and will involve the synergistic efforts of all community members. It will be an intense effort that will yield results in the short, medium, and long term. It is a gradual process that will only be effective if carried out by individual citizens, as well as by local administrations and businesses. A challenge for a different future!
